Tot ziens, Yiayia Sofia
Naxos, Cyclades, Greece
Yiayia Sofia spent her last years overlooking the Aegean from this small whitewashed terrace on Naxos. She listened to the bells of the goats coming up the hillside in the morning and to the sea at night. She passed peacefully in her chair, looking at the water.

Nonna Giulia
Trastevere, Rome, Italy
Nonna ran a small trattoria on this corner for over thirty years. Her ragu took six hours and she never wrote the recipe down. The trattoria is gone now, replaced by a gelato shop, but the corner is still hers in our memory.

Obaachan Yuriko
Cherry blossom park near Yoshino, Nara, Japan
My grandmother grew up in this village before the war and moved to Tokyo in 1958. She came back every cherry blossom season for the rest of her life. She passed last year, on the day the trees flowered. We scattered her ashes here, on a quiet morning, between the rows.
Persoon
Boris (1980-2019), our jazz uncle
Vanguard, Greenwich Village, New York, USA
Uncle Boris played stand-up bass in this club for over twenty years. He'd be on stage every Tuesday and Thursday night, half-drunk and entirely brilliant. We placed a small plaque on his usual stool, with permission of the new owners. The plaque is still there.
Persoon
Grossvater Werner (1934-2017)
Black Forest, near Triberg, Germany
Werner was a forester in the Black Forest for over fifty years. He knew every trail, every old beech and the song of every bird. We scattered his ashes near this clearing where he used to take us mushroom-picking on autumn weekends.
Persoon
Granny Beatrice (1928-2021)
Battersea Park, London, United Kingdom
Beatrice ran a small flower shop in Battersea for forty-two years. She would close the shutters at six and walk this exact path home along the river, every evening. We placed a small marker at her favourite resting bench. Visitors are welcome to leave a stone.

Abuelo Carlos
Pier at Cadaques, Costa Brava, Spain
My grandfather fished from this exact pier every morning for forty years. He never caught much, but he caught enough. After he passed we still come here at sunrise on his birthday. The pier knows us.
Persoon
Mormor Astrid (1931-2019)
High Coast Cliff, Gotland, Sweden
Astrid grew up on Gotland and never lost her accent. She told us stories of summers spent at this cliff, watching the boats from the mainland. She wanted to be remembered here, where the wind is still and the sea is everything.
Persoon
Andrzej, Polish 22nd Artillery (1923-2014)
Warriston Cemetery, Edinburgh, Scotland
Our great-grandfather served alongside Wojtek the bear with the Polish 22nd Artillery Supply Company in Italy. He moved to Edinburgh after the war and is buried here. We come on Polish Armed Forces Day each year.
Persoon
Vovo Mario
Chapel hill near Sintra, Portugal
My grandfather built the small chapel that still stands on this hillside, brick by brick, between 1964 and 1967. He used to bring us up here on Sunday afternoons. He was buried at its base in 2015. The chapel still smells of incense.
Persoon
Grandma Rose (1925-2022)
Lakeshore, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
Rose came to Canada from Glasgow in 1948 with a single suitcase. She raised six children in this small house on the edge of the lake. The house is still in the family, and so is the bench at the back where she used to sit with her tea. She lived to 97.
Persoon
Tio Roberto
Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Tio Roberto sold sugar cane juice from a small cart in Lapa for thirty years. Every musician knew him; every musician owed him a drink. After he passed we placed a small wooden sign on the wall opposite his usual spot. It says only his name and the years.
